The Cyprus legal profession
The legal profession in Cyprus is regulated under the Advocates Law, Cap. 2, by three bodies working together: the Cyprus Bar Association (Παγκύπριος Δικηγορικός Σύλλογος), the Legal Council, and the Disciplinary Board. The Bar Association has over 4,000 members and is a full member of the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE). To qualify, a law graduate completes a 12-month pupillage and passes the Legal Council examinations before enrolment in the Register of Advocates and issue of an annual practising licence, which must be renewed by 31 December each year.
Cyprus has no formal division between barristers and solicitors — every qualified professional holds a single title, Cyprus Advocate, and may appear in any court. Many practise through law firm LLCs. While the Bar Association recognises no official specialities, firms market distinct practice areas: Cyprus is a notable centre for shipping and admiralty, corporate and international tax structuring, immigration and residency, and funds — areas reflected in the practice-area listings below.
